Multiple award-winning, singer/song-writer Maya Azucena came to the BCCP Erasmus program where she met with students and performed for them.  Maya grew up in Brooklyn, NY  and still lives in the Flatbush community.  Students were able to talk to Maya about her childhood in Brooklyn, her amazing career and the endless possibilities the students can have as well.

After discussions, Maya performed three of her songs. The students were captivated by Maya’s voice, presence and spirit which lit up the classroom.  At the end of her performances students were all singing  a song they created  with Maya.

During Maya’s performance, student Petronella Blackman whispered “she felt like crying.”  When asked why she replied “because her voice is so beautiful.” 

And beautiful this experience was!

I like that fact there is a park 2 blocks away and many fast food and Chinese restaurants close by since I like food :)

I am not sure what I don’t like about my community.

It is full of Jewish people, Mexican and Russians. 

The place is called Boro Park!

I like that my community is safe and quiet (sometimes) and there is not that many crimes.  I enjoy the mix of people.

I don’t like that there are loud parties sometimes.

I would improve my community by talking to more cultural mixed people and fine those people who are loud.

What I like about my community is the transportation because it’s easy to go anywhere at anytime. 

I don’t like all the gang activity in the streets :(

I would like to do community service to help improve my community!
